ETIAS is coming to Europe in late 2026 — here's the plan
You'll have heard ETIAS mentioned alongside Europe's new border system. Here's what it actually is — and, just as importantly, what you don't need to do yet.
What it is
ETIAS (the European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a pre-travel online authorisation for visa-exempt visitors to the Schengen area — citizens of the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia and many other countries. If you've used the U.S. ESTA, it's the same idea: a quick online approval you get before you fly.
When it starts — and why not to act yet
ETIAS is expected to launch in the final quarter of 2026 (October–December). The EU has promised at least six months' notice of the exact date, so the timing is firm-ish but not yet fixed.
It is not required today. That matters because look-alike websites already charge to "register" you. Until it's officially live, there's nothing to buy — and when it does launch, you'll apply through the official EU site only.
What to expect at launch
- A short online application (about 10 minutes)
- A fee — set at €7, though the EU has proposed raising it to around €20; travelers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee
- Approval usually within minutes, valid for three years (or until your passport expires)
ETIAS vs. EES
Quick untangling: EES is the biometric border check that's already live. ETIAS is the pre-trip approval coming later. Once ETIAS starts, a European trip will involve both — get your ETIAS online beforehand, then register biometrics at the border.
