Is Virgin Voyages worth it? An honest look
Virgin Voyages set out to be the cruise line for people who don’t think they like cruises. Mostly it works — but it’s genuinely not for everyone. Here’s the honest version.
Who it’s not for
Start here, because it saves time. Virgin Voyages is adults-only (18+) — no kids, anywhere, ever. It’s nightlife-forward, design-led, and deliberately untraditional: no formal nights, no buffets, no assigned main-dining seating. If you’re traveling with family, or what you love about cruising is the classic big-ship routine, this isn’t your line — and that’s fine. That’s what the other lines are for.
What’s actually included
This is where Virgin is genuinely generous. In the fare:
- All the restaurants — 20+ venues, no buffets, and no “specialty” upcharge tier. The food is a real highlight.
- Gratuities — no auto-added daily tip.
- Wifi, group fitness classes, and basic non-alcoholic drinks.
What costs extra: alcohol (via a prepaid “Bar Tab” credit), shore excursions, and the spa. So the all-in feel is real for everything except drinks.
The vibe
Think boutique-hotel-at-sea with a nightlife streak. The four “Lady” ships — Scarlet, Valiant, Resilient, and Brilliant — lean into late shows, live music, karaoke rooms, and the odd pajama party, alongside a serious wellness and dining program. Lively, without being a megaship free-for-all.
The real cost
A seven-night Caribbean sailing tends to start around $1,000 per person for a Sea Terrace cabin, with a couple landing somewhere in the $2,500–$3,500 range once you add a Bar Tab. Not the cheapest cruise — but for what’s included, it’s competitive with the premium lines, and the included dining genuinely offsets what you’d pay elsewhere.
So — is it worth it?
If you’re an adult who cares about food, design, and atmosphere, and you want a cruise that doesn’t feel like one, yes — Virgin is one of the easiest lines to recommend right now, with four ships and new 2026 itineraries reaching as far as Alaska. If you want value family fun or traditional cruising, look elsewhere.
